First, let me say that I've never been an exceptional golfer. Heck, I don't know if you could say I have even really been a good golfer. At my best I had a 9 handicap index and that was at a time that I was practicing a lot and playing two to three times a week. When you get the opportunity to play that much, it isn't too difficult to consistently shoot rounds in the low 80s with the occasional 78 or 79. I think I held a lower opinion about my game and ability than it was, so I ended up playing at clubs that didn't suit me. Because I played so much, it was easy to play in a variety of clubs.

Things have been changed by recent life events. Due to a change of job, I am no longer able to work as much. Add to that the fact my wife gave birth to our first child and it has made the time available for me much less. You can get frustrated when your golf game is getting so complicated that you don't know how to fix it. It was then that I knew I needed to be honest with myself and quit playing in clubs designed for other players. Knowing that I won't be playing as much as I would like, I have to ensure that my clubs are supporting me instead of hurting.

The opportunity to try out the PING G irons gave me the opportunity to evaluate their effectiveness. Find out whether the irons live up to their promises.

To review the irons, I was given a set (4-PW), with the stock steel stiff shaft and golf pride Tour Wrap midsize grips. As it appears to be one among the softest stiff shafts, the shaft fits me well and offers me the desired trajectory.

PING G irons now have technology built in that helps average golfer hit the ball better and get more distance. COR Eye is the first, and it's what PING calls. This technology provides four times the amount of face flexing for consistently faster balls speeds across the hotter face. This is because any increase in shot height and ball speed will result in a greater distance, and steeper landing angles that will keep the ball on green even when using longer irons.

Ping G Irons Review: Bottom Line

The Ping G is a seriously good iron from Ping. Ping G Irons are able to blend the style of a player's iron and a game chassis. We think they do it well. Ping also sells them separately so that you don't have to buy multiple irons.

Ping G Series Irons Review

PING have been on an intense tear over the last year, reorganizing and simplifying the names of their lines. This trend is continued with the G-Series. The i-Series' numerical identifier has been removed and we now have the PING "G" irons. THP was fortunate enough to have a sample set to test (4-PW, AWT 2.0 shafts). We can safely say they look very familiar, and that there's still a lot of performance technology being added to them.

PING about the G Irons

Hyper 17-4 alloy, which is 40% stronger than standard 17-4 SS, can be created from the heat treatment of G irons. These alloys are thinner than traditional 17-4 SS and offer four times more face flexibility with better stability. These results result in large distance increases and higher peak trajectory which allows for greater stopping power, so it is possible to hit and hold green.

COR-Eye Technology generates sizeable distance gains by simultaneously activating the sole, face and top rail in flexing for consistently faster ball speeds across the hotter face. The G-head is stabler and more forgiving than the previous face flexing.

Connecting the Custom Tuning Port to the sole creates a deeper CG that helps elevate the launch angle while increasing MOI for greater accuracy.

The iron's elegant look at address is achieved by its thin top rail and satin-blast finish. COR Eye Technology and an extended multi-material damping tag are joined to form the cavity. This optimizes sound and feels.

PING's proprietary AWT2.0 ascending weight technology shafts have a positive effect on the G irons. They are a great combination of physics with feel. As they move from short irons into long irons, the shafts become lighter. To increase accuracy and clubhead speed, long-iron shafts with lighter weights can be used to square up the clubface. The shafts made of short iron or wedge are more heavy for greater trajectory control.

Review: Ping G Irons

Game enjoyment irons. This is how we classify irons into the following categories: blades; player's Irons; game-improvement and super game irons. Ping G-irons could be classified as game improvement irons, however don't let their name stop you from trying them. We sometimes don't want to admit our short comings and all desire to play blades, but sometimes enjoying the game with great shot after great shot is the better route. These Ping G irons go beyond game-improvement. They can also be used as Game-Enjoyment irons.

The Ping G-series irons have been repackaged into a better looking model. The G series irons have a smaller profile, are less off-set, and are thinner at the top, but still provide all you need in terms of accuracy and forgiveness. It is their appearance that makes them stand out. They have the best look of any G iron Ping produced. The blend of satin and chrome looks very good.

As a 4-UW stock set with DG-S300 shafts. It was interesting to me that the standard lie angle of these shafts is a yellow dot. Ping is a fitting system that I love. The lie colors, however, seem to have changed. I've used standard Ping sets in black, blue and dots before so getting these in stock yellow was not a surprise. Check to make sure the irons are still compatible with your previous Ping sets. Their stock lie angle still fits my swing well, even though it might be different. I also ordered them in at D2 so they would play at my preferred swingweight. These are all things that you should look into when buying a set of Pings. The extra effort to fit correctly is well worth it, as it doesn't increase your cost.

For a reason, I like to call it "game-enjoyment". You can hit them quickly, easily and high. These irons offer "game improvement" in an attractive package. A big reason for the high quality of shots that I hit with the G-irons is the new COR-Eye technology which is essentially variable face thickness technology for irons. While it has been around for years in drivers and woods but now irons use the same technology to create a warmer face that covers a wider area. This is the sweet spot, and it's something that everyone can enjoy.

Most of all, I liked the slimmer sole. The thick soles have always made it difficult for me to use game-improvement irons. It makes it hard for me to hit the clubs properly and has always been an issue with my golf swing. While it may be contrary to traditional thinking, the superior sole design allowed me more face forgiveness through better turf interaction.

These irons are longer, straighter and higher yet are very accurate and forgiving. They aren’t made for accuracy and consistency, but for distance. They excel on mis-hits as well as pured shots. They can spin slightly less than any other irons they play but they also use height for their stopping power, so they are capable of landing on a consistent spot.

The feel of ping ions is also changing. The first set of Pings that I reviewed was quite harsh. I recall how the ions could vibrate a lot, especially when they were mis-hit. But, the pings continue to make use of the pockets and tune bars within the pocket, which reduce vibration and provide a better feel. The pure hits are more enjoyable than the off-center. They aren't dead feeling, you know that you hit it off-center but because of the design, you won't lose too much ball speed or accuracy.

It's important to know

PRICE: PS90.00 YEAR: starting 2016 Ping G Iron review. First Look. Golf. Magic.com Golf. PING won the Magic Award last year. PING's product line was extremely well-received by consumers and is still very popular. But here's the issue: How can you improve such a remarkable product? Is PING going to be the victim of its success in 2011?

Centurion Club was the perfect place to see first-hand what 2016 will bring for PING.

The first thing you will notice about the G irons is they look different from past game improvement models from PING.

In reality, their aesthetics are closer to PING i and G Max. That is to say, they seem more player-iron than supergame improvement.

Their topline is very thin, with a small sole. Concealed Tuning Port, the weight behind the club, is concealed from view. It gives the iron a slimmer look.

From 4-iron through to wedges, irons can be seen sat behind the ball. It has a modern aesthetic that appeals to both the mass market and people who are tired of the outdated PING game-improvement Irons.

They are perfect! We could not stop hitting the balls, such was the amazing feel these irons offer, even in the adverse weather.
