Taylormade Spider X Putter Verdict

The Spider X looks are what attracted my attention immediately. It was great to roll and, especially for short distance putts you got the same "can't miss" feeling as the bigger Spider models.

On longer putts the more compact weights at the back give it a better balance and a more manageable shape than the larger Spider models, and for this reason I think it will have wider appeal.

TaylorMade has made the insert sound better than ever. It may have taken them over a decade, but I think they are finally on the right track with their inserts, so long may it continue.

The black on white line design on the crown is very easy to use and combines form with function. You can also choose a cleaner, more prominent single line alternative.

The only drawback might be that the Spider X is a pricey putter, but for once, I am not sure I really care. The Spider X looks so good, and it manages to achieve a high MOI design for a medium-sized head that is easy to align.

Taylormade'S Spider X Putter Is Optimised From Every Angle With A Smaller Head, Thicker Insert And Y-Shaped Sightline.

TaylorMade launched the Spider putter 10 year ago. Although they didn't think much about the design at that point, the technology to analyze the performance of the Spider putter was still not there.

Spider trickled out, and the company tied pros to 10 or 11 club agreements. That trickle though became a full on deluge when Jason Day shot to world #1 in 2016 using a Spider, painted red at his request. It say TaylorMade catapulted the model to being the most played putter at stacks of PGA Tour events over the last two years. With more Spider players than ever, it is now the right time to launch a new Spider X.

Spider X Putters: Key Features

The X Philosophy – True Path Alignment System The genesis of the Spider X philosophy lies in research derived from more than ten thousand putts from a distance of twelve feet, with results illustrating that golfers strike the ball toward the toe of the putter 66% of the time – this is the result of a parallax effect. As a result, engineers strove to re-engineer the mass properties of the putter head while simultaneously introducing a new alignment system – True Path – for easier alignment enhanced focus, leading to more putts struck on the center of the face and thus eliminating the parallax effect.

This is the Newest For 2021… Hydro Blast Spider X

Taylor. Made Spider X's putter has been the top-selling model for the franchise. This model delivers proven results at all levels of the game. It has been a winner on Tour for the past two seasons, including the beginning of the 2020-21 season. Retail sales have also seen record numbers.

Spider X Hydro Blast expands on this tradition with a brand-new colourway. High-pressure water pressure applied to aluminium creates a premium, smooth finish. This is achieved in a richly silvered colourway. This process adds durability as there is no need to paint the surface. It also reduces scratch resistance and chipping.

Spider X Hydro Blast uses the same multi-material construction techniques as the original Spider X. The Spider X Hydro Blast is made of a mixture of aluminium (2g), stainless (6g), and tungsten (12g), with a composite centre for stability and MOI optimization.

The True Path, Tour-proven design helps in alignment. The soft-feeling insert, which has 45deg grooves at 45 degrees, encourages forward roll. It also provides better sound and feel than solid faces.

You can choose from lengths 33, 34 or 35 inches.

The stock comes standard with the KBS Chrome C-Taper Stepless Shaft and the Super Stroke pisol GTR1.0 grip.

Taylor. Made Spider X putter RRP : PS299 Weight : 355g Models – Single Bend shaft (face balance), Small slantneck (Moderate Toe Hang) Finish options : Copper, Midnight Blue (Superstroke Pistol 1.0 grip)

This is how it feels

Taylor. Made the Spider Tour Black and Red retail models to feel different by using different inserts. Red version uses a Pure Roll insert with metallic finish. The Black model has a firmer click. A strike away from the center can feel a little more hollow. The Spider Tour Black is highly polarizing, and will not appeal to all. Feeling subjective. Taylor gets it. Made has alternative options.

Obviously the head is a large footprint and seems like a lot of putter to move. Weighing 355g, the weight is very balanced. It swings perfectly.

Who is the best/worst for it?

It's not for people who have a limited budget. The putter is considered one of the most costly options and should be only purchased by those who golf regularly.

It's best for people who aren't dependent on alignment when they're putting. It's not recommended if you heavily depend on the alignment lines that a lot putters use. Just my opinion.

I have a bit of a bend (or arc) when I'm putting and this was one of the more comfortable putters I've tested. You'd likely like this putt if you can.

How is The Taylormade Spider X Face balanced?

Taylormade Spider X is available in a face-balanced model. Professionals use the slightly arched version of the Taylormade Spider X with a 30° toe hold. You can see the images below to help determine which version you are using.

Standard Spider X Standard with Slant Neck and 30 Degree Toe Hang. This Spider X standard has the 30 degree hang. You should pay particular attention to your hosel. This version is what most pros use (eg Rory Mcilroy or Jason Day), Jon Rahm, Matthew Wolff, etc.

Spider X Face Balanced Single Bend Spider X As you can see, the Spider X Face Balanced has a different hosel which connects the shaft and the putter head. Personally, I prefer the feel and look of the toe-hang version.

What size version do you want?

My theory is that many people putters are too long for their height. This is my personal guideline for selecting the right length shaft:

The 34-inch version is recommended for those who are shorter than 6 feet.

If you are taller than 6ft, go for the 35in version

The 34-inch version is my choice as I am 5'10". The shorter version is easier for me to maintain a balanced posture at the address. I find it easier to adjust my posture and spine properly. The weight of the club is also more balanced. This decision made me very happy.

Obvioulsy if you've used a 35 inch putter your whole life and you're worried that it might be too drastic too change to the shorter version, then just stick to what you know.
