Review: Taylormade Tour Preferred Udi (Ultimate Driving Iron)

Share

Pros: These are not the driving wheels of your father or grandfather. Easy launch, great distance and surprising forgiveness.

Cons: The driving irons have a tendency to be more forgiving that you would expect. These are great tools for improving your game. However, if forgiveness for mishits is an important concern, then hybrids or fairway tees might be the best choice.

Bottom Line: Tour Preferred UDI provides distance and playability. The UDI provides long distance from the tee, with a good feel, feedback and forgiveness for mishits.

The first time the UDI was in play in a round of golf, I casually stated on the first tee that I thought I would hit 1-iron. Then the others looked confused at me until they said, "you're going hit what?"

The driving iron market is red hot right now and every manufacturer is trying to put out high performance equipment that delivers maximum distance and playability. Taylormade wanted the UDI club to have both the playability and distance of a hybrid as well as the accuracy and working ability of an iron.

Review: Honma Sw737-Vs. forged irons

Pros: Incredible feel all the way through the bag. These irons have great forgiveness when it comes to mishits. They also offer a good distance and slightly more loft for better-players.

Cons: Many will not consider the cost ($150/club) as a viable option.

Bottom Line: All TW737 models boast stunning specifications and look. TW737Vs with their stronger lofts and slightly wider shape could be the perfect choice for player who is looking to make the transition from game improvement irons to better irons.

Fourpar18

Initialy, I was afraid of the M1's regular flexibility so I took it easy for about 10-15 swings. Ball SHOT off the face, loud crack (didn't care for it, but not too bad) and ball just kept rising and rising but didn't balloon. The ball just floated. I put another one down, and noticed how the ball looked behind it. I realized …" I could play this club!" I tried the 5-7 swings. They were easy swings and were directed at a distance of 170 yards. This is my normal 7 iron distance. I had a good swing and was able to fly it within 20 yards. My next 5-10 was the hardest, and I was determined to go after it. The ball flew for 10 yards. These balls were still just short the 200 yard mark. I can't believe they went 200 yards on a 7 iron. Yes, they have lofts. However it's nice to hear "my 7 irons are just few 190-220 yards!" The Lamkin UTX grip is my favorite!

It was fascinating to note that the M2 was more quiet than the M1! This one has more carbon fiber and a Geocoustic label. I am sure that it has something to do with all that carbon fiber but it does have a better sound. It was straight and long, just like the M1. Although it was a little more fragile than the True Temper shaft, the REAX shaft flew a little faster and felt a little heavier. There wasn't much else that I could find.

Comparing a Driving Iron to a Hybrid:

In recent years, hybrids have become much more popular than driving irons thanks to the additional loft the club has. A driving iron bridges the distance between you and your driver. Driving irons are easier to handle in windy conditions than hybrids. It is generally more sensible to use a hybrid when there are difficult lies or situations in which you desire a greater launch trajectory, such as clearing large bodies of water.

What's a Driving Iron?

The modern driving iron, a cavity-backed iron with a hollow back, has a shorter trajectory than the hybrid and fairway woods but offers more power than the typical 2 or 3. A low flight trajectory with a high ball flight can be very effective in delivering an impactful shot. It is also ideal to get a lot more roll out on hard fairways or cut through windy conditions.

Originally, these irons were blades; Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan have both used 1 and 2 irons to clinch major championships. It is difficult to hit the blades well. At first, it looked like these irons would soon be obsolete. Many improvements have been made over the last decade to the modern driver iron. Also known as a Utility Iron, it makes amateur golfers' lives easier.

So. It's so. What do you think?

I'm actually quite curious to hear your thoughts on the UDI.

It was fun to have some playful fun while the Mini Driver drove, but it was very much appreciated by you two. I was surprised by that.

Mocking aside, the Mini has proven to be the best addition to my bag since I started playing this ridiculous game. Some people were concerned that the Mini wouldn't work on the fairway. They were wrong. It came out better than every fairway wood I played. I also hit it confidently EVERYWHERE, except sidehill lies.

Could the UDI offer similar versatility? If I'm able to get a Mini through 3-foot heather then most people should be able hit a UDI from a fairway…and beyond the rough.

Despite this, it doesn't make much sense. What would you put it in your daily bag? Do you just want to recreate the feeling of The Open? It could be a club that you bought out of nostalgia but don't use beyond banging at the range.

Does it even make sense to you spend money on?

Is it all about?

Max Impact 2.0, the U505 utility's chassis and design is the key to its success. The Max Impact 2.0 chassis is optimized for high launch distance and forgiveness.

This is made up of a new core support design, to add power and improve stability in the head, a high resilience polymer core which adds speed across the face whilst retaining feel, and the forged SUP10 L face which is the key technology behind the claims of high ball speeds.

A new Wide Sole Chassis comes as a result of feedback from Titleist's tour players, featuring a wider sole but with a shorter blade length, and a more heel-based CG location.

Multi-material construction consists of a'muscleplate', similar in size to T200 irons. The muscle plate is made out of a kind of plastic that can improve sound quality, reduce weight and still look like metal. The polymer core works together with this to dampen the vibration that large heads make.

Titleist has also added D18 weighting of tungsten to help improve weight distribution. Although tungsten is costly, it is a crucial tool to ensure that the CG has the correct location for easy launch characteristics.

The U505's standard shaft is graphite Hzrdus Smoke Black. If you feel like Jordan Spieth, then you might consider upgrading to Titleist's Featured Shafts.

In utility irons, graphite shafts keep growing in popularity. This is not just for amateur play but also in professional tournaments. These shafts are popular because they allow for greater speed and launch. This improves utility performance, and makes life a lot easier.
