Taylormade P790 Udi Iron Review

TaylorMade P790-UDI iron, which is basically the 2-iron P790 version of P790 irons, can be used either as a standalone or added to the set.

UDI stands for Ultimate Driving Iron but most of the design is the same as the regular P790 irons as you have a cast 8620 carbon steel body that uses a high-strength forged 4140 carbon steel face cup that is wrapped around the front.

TaylorMade then fills the hollow with Speed. Foam through the screw in the toe.

This supports the thin face and acts as a noise-dampening device to increase the UDI's sound quality.

There is also a weight of tungsten in the backside of the sole. This helps lower the CG as well as position it so that it launches at maximum velocity and maximizes MOI.

TaylorMade Speed Pocket is used on the sole to maximize ball speed. This pocket can be found especially at strikes that are lower than the face.

As the head is a little larger than the standard P790 long irons, TaylorMade has been able to reduce the size of the inverted cone, or the variable face thickness, to make it thinner around the edges of the face for more ball speed.

Taylormade Sim Dhy & Udi Utility Iron Review

Golfalot wanted me to test these irons. My initial reaction was "maybe I'm the wrong person to do it". I am an avid hybridist and have never used any 2 irons in my whole life.

Dustin Johnson is also a gamer, which I think is another reason that they would be for me. Because my game is almost as far from DJ's game as humanly possible.

Even so, 2 irons today don't even come close to the old ones Seve and Ben Hogan used years ago. These irons were so easy to use that I was confident I'd be able get the ball up with them, I tried them out.

TaylorMade SIM DHY and UDI are designed to appeal to golfers who enjoy the versatility and feel of a long, iron rather than a hybrid.

Taylormade Sim Udi & Dhy Utility iron Verdict

Although I was able to hit the SIM UDI more accurately than expected, I don't think it will replace my hybrid. Unless I play a links course that has good greens and I am able to run up the ball.

It is a blessing to have a driver who can hit the ball with the most power, so that's something I appreciate.

Unfortunately the SIM DHY is certainly not for me as it just went a little too high and didn't travel much further than my existing 4 iron, when I would actually want it to replace my 20 degree hybrid which carries 178 yards.

This reminds me of the original Ping cross-over, which I attempted to play while on tour but could not get along with due to its bulky head and large sole.

For many, the Driver and the 3 wood are their enemies. It is therefore important to have something forgiving and friendly that they can use on long approaches into green.

Whom is It Aimed at?

The UDI was designed for the golfer who wants a deeper ball flight and a compacter look behind the ball. It is more suited to the more skilled player. If you're looking to get an iron down the fairway for accuracy and still have a little more forgiveness than with the P790 UDI if you don't quite strike it, then this is for you.

The DHY is for the player that wants to look like DJ but can't launch the ball. This club helps with that as well as helping players on the tee who can't hit hybrids or woods. This club is great for getting the ball in the play, both on the fairway and as you approach the green.

Taylor. SIM UDI pro: Penetrating, low-launching ball flight. This head shape will work well for more golfers. Made SIM UDI Cons Ball flight was a little one-dimensional Not particularly suited to higher handicappers Taylor. SIM DHY pros Easy to launch. It may be useful for those who have difficulty with the woods. Taylor SIM DHY Cones Very big head shape. The ball flight was just too high.

This may be a good read for you.

So. So. What do you think?

Actually, I am very curious about your opinions on the UDI.

I enjoyed a bit of playful fun at the expense of the Mini Driver, but you guys were largely receptive to it. It surprised me.

Mocking aside, the Mini has proven to be the best addition to my bag since I started playing this ridiculous game. Some people were concerned that the Mini wouldn't work on the fairway. These concerns were not justified. I hit it higher than any fairway golf wood I've played and hit it confidently every where (except from side hill lies).

Can the UDI be equally versatile? If I'm able to get a Mini through 3-foot heather then most people should be able hit a UDI from a fairway…or out of the rough.

That said, I really don't know where the UDI make sense for most guys (I did say the same about the Mini). Is it something you'd put in your bag every day? It's just for replicating the Open at home. Are you buying it out of nostalgia or to bang balls at the range with?

Does it even make sense to you spend money on?

How does it all work?

Continuing the SIM (Shape In Motion) theme first seen at the beginning of the year with the release of the SIM Drivers Fairway Woods , the utilities feature noticeably different shapes and profiles which define how they perform out on the course.

SIM DHY is larger in footprint than the other models, has a longer sole, higher profile and more thicker upper.

Taylor has a higher trajectory because Taylor uses hollow-body construction. This allows for low and deep CG placements. Made also has utility irons.

SIM UDI is compact and has a tighter leading edge and thinner sole.

Unlike the DHY, the weight port is placed on the rear of the club in order to raise the CG slightly, helping to promote a lower launch and more penetrating ball flight.

The soles of both models are rounded, inspired from the SIM Max Rescue sole. This is to increase turf interaction on uneven surfaces.

Taylor. It is well-known that the club should be used from fairway to rough and not off the tee. This will improve playability.
