It was a great experience.

I don’t do a lot of club reviews on Practical Golf because one golfer’s results cannot predict what others will experience with a given club. As I know that you all want results, I’m happy to test to see if there have been any.

My Titleist 917 D3 Driver was compared to the Callaway Epic Flash. My Titleist driver is custom fit and is optimal for my swing since I am a low spin player. Many golfers didn’t like the 917 D3. They also thought it was too spinny. Titleist addressed this issue in recent TS lines. I have my Titleist driver now for over two years and it works great. These results surprised me because I have a high limit on my distance.

Club Ball Speed in mph (rpm) Launch Angle in degrees (carry yards) Total Yards

Titleist 917 D3 149 2076 14.4 247 275

Callaway Epic Flash 151 2077 15.5 259 287

My launch speed and height were both factors in the significant distance gain. With ball speeds approaching 155mph and drives exceeding 290yds, these are some of my longest ever drives.

You could say I was a little impressed with the Callaway Epic Flash. You could probably dial the driver up a bit more with a better head/shaft combo. However, that was only the extent of the loaned demo club. The club looked great and felt amazing at impact. These subjective views can differ among players. In my opinion, the performance of a vehicle is more important than price when it comes to buying a new one.

Callaway Epic Flash Flash Callaway Drivers Flash Face Review The Callaway Epic Flash Drivers, now available, are yet another proof of why this brand remains a pioneer in driver design.

To be truly believed, Flash Face is a stunning performer.

* First Look at the Callaway Epic Flash driver

Callaway created the Epic driver with revolutionary Jailbreak technology two years ago. Epic has been a very popular piece of equipment in golf. Jailbreak’s performance improvements and increased speed made Epic a truly remarkable product.

Epic Flash, another revolutionary leap in driver technology, looks like it will surpass the achievements of its forerunner.

I first tested both the Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero drivers at Callaway’s Ely Performance Centre in Carlsbad, California, at the beginning of December and I’ve been playing with them extensively ever since. Both are more than worthy successors to the excellent Epic and Rogue drivers and deliver on all aspects of performance – so much so, in fact, that I’m pretty sure I’ve found my new gamer for the 2019 season.

Allow me to explain.

Overall Impression

You can find many websites which compare the data of all new drivers. You can’t rely on the numbers alone to decide your next driver. What is optimal for one golfer is far from ideal for the next. But one thing I was curious about was how often golfers replace their drivers, and I went to Twitter to test the waters.

My guess is that golfers will switch to a more efficient driver, if they see a change in technology or an idea. 77% golfers have a driver at least three years old. If this sounds like you and are wondering whether or not it is time for a change, don’t be discouraged.

Now, whether or not shelling out $500+ for the upgrade is worth the uptick in performance (or even within your budget) is another question. A club fitting specialist is a must-have if your goal is to improve your game.

Callaway Epic Flash will be your first driver.

Callaway Epic Flash Driver Review 2021

You shouldn’t confuse this with Epic Driver, Epic Sub Zero Driver and Epic Flash Star.

Although Epic may have to retire the Epic brand for a time, we still recommend the Epic Flash standard driver.

Flash Drivers, one of the most talked about golf clubs currently in existence, are the Flash Drivers.

In this Callaway Epic Flash Driver Review we’ll compare the Driver with Epic Drivers.

Callaway Epic Flash Driver Reviews Similar to Epic Flash Sub Zero’s, the driver also comes with a sliding-weight. You get a 12 gram Epic Flash Sub Zero weight, and a 16 gram Epic Flash Sub Zero weight.

The Epic Flash was designed for players with a mid-to high handicap. The Sub Zero is more for the lower handicap. The heavier weight will promote more of a fade or draw bias.

The Driver is designed to increase ball speed while still allowing for forgiveness and some control over the ball’s flight. It’s a huge task to complete a product launch.

Conclusion

Callaway Epic Flash’s performance this year has been exceptional. Both Irons and Drivers have shown an improvement in performance over the Epic Flash and have set new standards when it comes time to compete.

The one true downside to the Epic driver was the price point when it was first released.

This is the perfect driver for the weekend 15 handicapper and not all of those people have $550 to spend on one club.

Callaway flashes are going to be more popular as there will be more deals.

It is vital to understand, which hopefully the review clearly stated, that flash drivers have the potential to impact both the future of golf and club technology.

First and foremost, thanks to MGS and all the staff at the forum for choosing to review this 2019 Most Wanted drivers! It’s hard to beat that feeling when you wake up to find one of our moderators sent you a private note with an intriguing title, such as “Callaway Epic Flash Testers!”

Kory my name, I live in Hawaii and am lucky to be able to share my Hawaiian heritage with others. Growing up in a family of golfers, I’ve been playing since a very young age, maybe since I was around 5. A relative of mine had some club clubs which he sanded down. He then put on some grips and joined me on the range with my stepdad. Living in Las Vegas at the time, when I was around the age of 10 was when I really started to understand the concepts of hitting down into the ball instead of trying to sweep it, thinking about the next shot, etc., and started to break 100 from the ladies’ tees. The winter holidays were in Hawaii so I could play all year. My passion for golf faded after college. Two years ago some of my closest friends took me back to the course and made it a new obsession. There are many playing partners, including former college D1 golfers and High School State Champs. But I don’t care much about who they play with. I love to be on the green and have a great time regardless of how I do.

I have never joined a club and so far I do not hold an “official handicap”. However, my average score is 80-83. My preferred course distances are 6300-6500 meters. My current 18 Birdies score is 9 but I have purchased Arccos since being selected to take the test. I will use Arccos to gauge my game as it develops. While I’m able to swing a fair amount for my size, one of my greatest strengths is the ability to create decent clubhead speed. Unfortunately, I struggle to consistently hit putts and have difficulty with consistency. If I’m playing well my driver swing speed ranges from 103-105 miles per hour. It’s also very consistent. Friends have told me many times that “I play to hit driver.” I love golf and I will not be happy if I need to use my irons to get to the right position on the green. It’s a common thing for me to allow the dog to eat. That usually results in me eating the soup at the course.

My average ball flight takes me to mid-height, or whatever I consider mid-height, draw. When I am stuck, my miss can be a block, an over draw/hook, or a combination of both. Since my Flash fitting, I have been trying to move my path out-to in a bit more. (More on that later).

Current WITB

Like I said, I enjoy driving and trying out different drivers for my games. You have to consider that in the 2 years since my joining MGS I have changed 3 times. None of my drivers were awful, but I did gain something from each one I tried. A list of my drivers since 2017 (all of them were fit in some capacity, either custom at my local shop, or at a range demo day):

Test Results

Epic Flash is a great product. I have tracked 11 rounds and taken 63 shots using Arccos over the past month. I also took a few range practice sessions. While I won’t sound like the Callaway fanboy that I am (I don’t), the driver is truly making me smile.

9 out of 10 points. I like the shape. It really seems ready to release the ball at address. The shape is more stretched than the pear-shaped TS3. You almost don’t notice the graphics on the top unless they’re directly in direct sunlight. I like the shiny look. The faded carbon fiber around the perimeter looks very elegant. Also, the light green/yellow exterior paint adds a lovely touch. The Callaway Chervon simple alignment sign makes it look great.

However, the underside is a completely different story, and the only reason I didn’t give it a 10 for looks. I know for some, it doesn’t matter much because you never see it, but it didn’t feel “right” to give it a perfect score if I thought there was room for improvement. While I don’t mind the green/yellow combination, the design looks good in moderation. The pinstripes around its perimeter are a nice touch. However, the Green Bay Packer Greens and the gold used to make it look is too much for me.

On the back, you can still see the carbon weave. The face looks good after 11 rounds.

Sound and feel (8 points out of 10) There have been many discussions about the sound quality of the driver’s voice throughout the thread. As this topic is very subjective, each individual could perceive a totally different sound. My ears perceive the sound more as a crackle than as a metallic sound. This is similar to how a baseball bat made of wood can sound different from one made of metal. The sound is still a little bit metal-y, as it’s made out of metal. But, the carbon crown reduces it and helps to change the acoustics. No one is going to snap their neck to look your way at the range, but your playing partners are going to know when you’ve struck the middle when it sings the national anthem of BOOMTOWN, USA. It sounds great!

The feel across the face – and believe that I’ve tested all parts of the face – is pretty soft overall. It’s easy for me find the spot where it’s located on my face. Also, the sweet spot feels soft and springy so you can tell immediately when one is missing. I like being able to tell where on the face I’m striking it because it helps me make slight adjustments mid-round. It’s not Mizuno butter forged soft, but it’s just soft enough to not feel cheap, while still feeling like it’s firm enough to really send one deep. It didn’t give me any different feelings.

Basic Characteristics (20 points out of 20) I give this driver an excellent score in this section. Comparing to my TS2 that I sold after only 2 rounds and one range, this driver is more precise, higher quality, and longer. TS2 was not given a fair shot due to its poorly fitting shaft. However, the results I have gotten with Flash are so good that I won’t be tempted to buy any other product currently available on the market – which is a big deal coming from a driver who’s a ho.
