A lot of my coaching is done by helping beginners improve their grip and posture. After that, they are able to swing. My students often stare at me with confusion, but this is the best way I know to swing. Once you have your posture right, and then get your grip, it’s time for a good swing. As I said at the start of the article, your setup dictates the rest of your golf swing.

The following section gives you a little more info for the golf backswing and downswing, but the key gem for swinging a golf club is at the end of the article and it is a very simple swing thought.

Backswing involves a twist of the wrists and turning your body. As you can see, the following images demonstrate how this works. If you have your setup correct you should find that as you turn your body, the wrist automatically want to hinge – as shown by the red lines below.

Looking down on the target line (below), you can see that your club revolves around your body in an arc (sometimes known as your arc, or swing plane). The grip of your club should point at the golf ball half-way back. This is called a ‘on plane’.

By the time your backswing has reached its highest point, your club head should be pointed over your right shoulder. You should have your right elbow and left hand below the golf club as seen in the right-hand bottom image.

However, this doesn’t mean you can hit every shot. Here you will be able relax, unwind and get back on the course to play the ball.

These positions are great for building the confidence to swing well in back. Continue to practice them until the movement feels natural.

The Downswing

You can make a backswing that is very smooth. The downswing allows you to balance your swing. From the top of your golf swing you should feel your weight shifts a little towards your front foot, before you unwind to face your target.

The moment that your club contacts the ball is called impact. If you are making contact with an iron, your club’s face should be straight and the club must be moving toward the ground. The same is true when hitting a hybrid , hitting a long iron hitting a fairway wood . You will only need to aim slightly up when hitting the driver. Amateur golfers often try to put the ball in the air by lifting it off the ground and then hit it under. In order to get the ball in the air, you have to bottom out your swing after the ball. For iron players, it is important to have a lot of lag in order to properly “cover the golf ball”. If you hit the ground first, you’ll hit it “fat” and short. It will be “thinner and lower” if you only hit the ball. By hitting the ball along with the ground you can get that feeling of good contact, sending the ball straight up.

You want your weight to transfer towards your front foot during the downswing transition (left for right-handed players). Amateur golfers too often lean back to allow their weight move the wrong way. Also, be very careful of how much your head is moving . A swing that is too long at this point can make for bad contact.
