The Par Of A Single Hole
Consider any hole on a course of golf. Let’s use Augusta National Golf Club as an example. It’s a par-5 hole. What does that mean? It means five strokes are required for an expert golfer to complete the hole.
The value assigned to represent par for an individual hole is always comprised of two putts plus the number of strokes it should take an expert golfer to reach the green. Although par-3, par-4 and par-5 are the most common classifications for holes, par-6 can occasionally be encountered. The par-4 hole is longer than the par-3 hole and the par-5 hole longer than the par-4.
An expert golfer will only need one stroke on a par-3 green. Then, he or she can make two more strokes to get to the green.
On a par-4, he should need two strokes to reach the green, followed by two putts, for four strokes total.
She is likely to make it to the green on a par-5 in just three strokes. Then, two more strokes are required for five strokes.
What does Bogey In Golf Mean?
It is confusing because it can have two meanings in golf. One comes from the other
Published Confusionally, the golf term “bogey” can have two distinct meanings. The older meaning is from the younger. They are both still commonly used. However, the meaning of “bogey” in golf depends on its context. It also depends upon what period of history you are talking about.
Bogey, originally used to mean the score that very skilled golfers should try to reach. This is distinct from the term par.
Although the idea of bogey originated in 1890s but was originally known only as the ground score’, not ‘bogey’.
In the US, par was more common than bogey.
The Stableford scoring scheme was developed by Frank Stableford. However, the points were based on par rather than bogey. Under Dr Stableford’s initial system, 2pts could be earned for each hole if you match par (bogey). Par is a popular term that was used regularly in golf since the early 1900s. Par also assigns a target score to each hole, but par was calculated more scientifically, by dividing up holes by their length.
Bogey was more difficult to identify because it depended on club members assessing the difficulty of the task. Therefore, implementation and standard could differ between clubs.
