The term “bogey” can also be used to refer to a specific person in the USGA’s handicap rating system for golf courses.
“A player with a USGA Handicap Index of 17.5 to 22.4 strokes for men and 21.5 to 26.4 for women. In normal conditions, a male Bogey golfer could hit his shot at 200 yards from the tee and be able to reach a hole measuring 370 yards in only two shots. A female bogey player can also hit her tee shot from 150 yards, and can play a hole measuring 280 by two shots. For course rating purposes, players who score a Handicap Index of between these parameters but are too far off the tee or are extremely long are considered bogey. This definition of “bogey” is used to rate slopes and courses. A rating team is a group USGA-certified persons who go to a particular golf course and assess the expectations of its golfers.
Ratings are based on how well scratch players will be playing the course (scratch-golfers average par scores), as well as how well bogey and seasoned golfers will enjoy it. A slope rating, which is a way of thinking about it, refers to the difficulty level of a course relative to scratch golfers. What Does Bogey In Golf Mean?
The confusion is that it has two distinct golfing meanings.
Published Confusionally, the golf term “bogey” can have two distinct meanings. The older meaning is derived from the newer one. Both meanings can still be used. The context will determine the answer to “What does bogey in golf mean?” It depends also on which period of history it is.
The original meaning was “bogey”, which was the goal score of an exceptionally good golfer. It was different from par which is also an expression that was used to refer to the “perfect” score for a hole.
