Rules for the Scramble
Scramble is a type of play that’s used often in charitable fund raising and casual golf. You can find many different types of scrambles. There are the Florida, Texas, Two-Man and Ambrose Scrambles, Texas Bloodsome (Reverse), Las Vegas Powerball, Shamble and Miami Step-Aside.
Rules of Golf don’t cover “Scrambles”. You should be aware that the Rules can vary and they are often very different.
A Scramble is a group of four players who play together. Each team member hits a tee shot on each hole. The team then collectively decides which of the four balls is in the best position to play next. Each team determines the ball that is best and marks it position using various tools, such as a token, coin, or ball-marker. Once the ball has been retrieved, players take a shot at their chosen position. Repeat this process for every shot until the ball’s hole is reached.
Most people have participated in Scrambles before. As you can see, there will come a time when the relevant Rules are brought up. I’m often asked to clarify.
My answer? “The Rules of Golf do not cover a scramble.” I dug up a few old published Scramble Rules from an event about a decade ago. They are from an American Cancer Society event. These can help reduce some of the arguments associated with a standard round of golf.
Each team member can place one ball through the Green within one club length of the shot selected, but not closer to the hole. If the shot is taken in fairway, primary, secondary, or fringe, each player may place the ball in the same relative location on the course. It is possible to improve the lie either by placing the ball by hand or moving it along with the clubhead.
Each team member can place a ball on the Putting Green within 4 inches of either the shot or the hole. Hand placement is required. The ball must be placed by hand.
What is a Scramble in Golf?
Golf statistics define scrambling as:
The percent of time a player misses the green in regulation, but still makes par or better.
A player plays a par-3 hole and misses the green on the tee shot. The player chips up and makes the putt. It’s a great scramble chance.
Playing a par-3-hole hole results in a player missing the green from the tee shot. A player chipping up misses the putt. This scramble attempt is lost.
When a player plays a hole in four, the ball is hit behind a tree. A missed regulation green results. Next, the player makes the putt by hitting the third shot onto green. This is a successful scramble opportunity.
A player takes the first tee shot outside of bounds. Another player makes the putt, misses the green the second time around. Although this is what is generally known as an ‘up and down’, it isn’t counted as a successful scramble because the player didn’t make par or better.
Strategy In Scramble Tournaments
What should the order of play be? Is it better for a straight hitter to tee-off first than last? To get out of trouble, should terrible putters putt the first? Let’s go over some scramble strategies. The recommendations that follow are based on the Scramble entry in the book Chi Chi’s Golf Games You Gotta Play, co-authored by Chi Chi Rodriguez . Because if you can’t trust Chi Ch when it comes to golf games, who can you trust?
For drives and approach shots:
Be sure to put the weaker (and longer) players first. If the anchor spot is not left for long hitters, it puts too much stress on them to get back to their game and reach the fairway. Long hitters have the freedom to play second or third. You must also be consistent and straight to handle anchor duties.
Some golfers are great drivers and lousy iron players. Others do the exact opposite. You should take this into consideration when determining the order of play stroke by stroke. Remember, it’s up to the team on each stroke the order in which golfers hit. You should keep the weaker players on the first and the best golfers behind them.
Par-5s: Let the smaller hitters play first, regardless of their skill level. The big bombers will then be last to set the green on fire in two.
Short-game shots on the putting green and for short-games:
Don’t pick a bunker ball to play. (Unless everyone on the team has hit into bunkers!) Keep in mind that even the longest shot does not necessarily mean the most difficult shot. Also, don’t just pick the nearest ball to the hole. Think about angles, pin placement, dangers, and even the lie.
