Tiger Woods Returns to Golf 10 Months Following Car Wreck. Tiger Woods will join his son Charlie in 2021 Pnc Champion
Tiger Woods has decided to wrap up a very difficult year in a happy way. Woods revealed Wednesday that after nearly losing his right leg due to an accident in February, he will be participating in the 2021 PNC Championship, Orlando, Dec. 18-19, with Charlie.
“Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie,” Woods tweeted Wednesday. “I’m playing in the @PNCchampionship as a Dad, and couldn’t feel more proud and excited.” Woods and the duo also teamed up in December, but that was his last competitive appearance. In January, as the PGA Tour season started to unfold, Woods had an additional back surgery. He was hospitalized almost one month following his Los Angeles car collision.
The weeks since then have been a long, slow march to this moment.
Woods told the Hero World Challenge last week that he was not sure when he’d be able again to play PGA Tour Golf. Even though this event isn’t on the PGA Tour, it’s a significant step in Woods’ recovery.
Woods explained that he doesn’t know the exact date Woods will be playing at Tour Level. “Now, I’ll play a round here or there, a little hit and giggle, I can do something like that. It’s a great idea. That is a good idea. I dislike the tees in the back. Play It Forward is my favorite. … It was eye-opening for me to notice that my shots now fall from the sky much shorter than they did before. That’s something that for a while there it didn’t look like I was going to.” In a field that included 20 athletes, Team Woods was placed 7th. Charlie carried their squad in his first big public appearance, and the entire week was a delight. You would never have known that Woods would continue to play in tournaments for at least 12 more months.
Henrik, Karl Stenson and Nick Faldo are among this year’s participants, as well as Nelly, Petr Korda and Wayne Ball. Justin and Mike Thomas, who won last year, and John and Little John Daly, will also be in the field. Although the stakes here are not quite as high than in PGA Tour events (which is why the event is so joyful), this year’s field includes Henrik and Karl Stenson, Nick and Matthew Faldo, Nelly and Petr Korda, Bubba Watson, Wayne Ball, Justin, Mike Thomas, John, Little John Daly, and others.
What does that look like for a career? Woods has, throughout the last 10 days in multiple interviews, insisted over and over again that he is not committed to putting himself through the personal grind of playing a robust schedule on the PGA Tour ever again. He referenced Ben Hogan’s reduced playing days following his own car accident and mentioned how he could “click off” a tournament every now then.

Woods required surgery for serious injury to his leg. He was involved as the sole driver in a rollover on February 23, 23. He had suffered open fractures in his tibia and fibula, injuries to his foot and ankle, and trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg. A crash report later revealed Woods was also “knocked unconscious, laceration to the lower front jaw, bruised right and left rib cage, fractured right tibia and fibula, possible right ankle injury.” In May Woods spoke out about his healing process to Golf Digest, describing it as one of the most painful experiences of his life.

Tiger Woods won’t be one of Steve Stricker ‘s assistants at the Ryder Cup, but the U.S. captain, who said he’s been in touch with the golfer, gave the most optimistic update since Woods was involved in a serious car accident on Feb. 23.
Stricker, the fifteen-time major winner of the game, suggested to SiriusXM Radio that he might play again after making six picks to the U.S. Team against Europe in Sept. 24.
“I’ve talked to Tiger a lot,” Stricker said in the interview at Whistling Straits with former PGA Tour players Carl Paulson Dennis Paulson . He is still part of the Ryder Cup Family. However, he can’t serve as a captain assistant because of ongoing rehabilitation. This includes his continued efforts to get back to playing golf. “He’s making good progress. Things are moving in a positive direction. Stricker said last week to ESPN that Woods will not be attending Whistling Straits in the role of vice captain. He’s not available at the moment. Although he is making good progress, Whistling Straits can be difficult to navigate. He has already helped and will continue helping.” Woods was seriously injured in the Southern California crash, where he sustained broken bones and numerous injuries to his right foot and ankle. Woods and Mark Steinberg have not provided any information about Woods’ condition in the past months, except for a picture Woods shared on social media showing him using crutches to get around his yard. The photo was taken in April.
Steinberg was not able to reach him Wednesday.
Woods went 3-0 at the U.S. Presidents Cup 2019. He was playing as the captain. Woods last played at Father-Son in December with Charlie. The 2020 Masters was his last major tournament.
A fourth back operation had been performed in December. He was still recovering and on the way to shooting a documentary at a local golf course when the accident took place.
Woods had been driving fast and crossed the median. His car ended up in grassy areas after he rolled over. He was in the hospital for nearly a month.

In an interview on Monday 29 November, the 45-year old addressed his future as a player in golf. He said that he is now accepting the reality that he won’t be the same player that he was once.
According to him, it is possible to play the tour for a day and never work full-time. “It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. That’s okay. … I can still participate in the game of golf. I can still, if my leg gets OK, I can still click off a tournament here or there.”

Tiger’s legacy, however, is not confined to the golf course. There is no denying that he is flawed and troubled. His collision with the fire hydrant in reverse, to his awkward and televised admissions of infidelity on tv, to the indelible picture of his DWI arrest which found five drugs in his bloodstream – fans and others watching the game wonder what Tiger should weigh.
Devoted Tiger fans and equally ardent Tiger haters exist in an uneasy and uncomfortable space in the golf landscape, which makes him unlike any other great player of an era. Woods has been a subject of much controversy throughout his whole career.
Today’s professional golfers are proud to claim that Tiger is more friendly and open-minded to them than his predecessors. Reports say that he participated as the Presidents Cup playing captain and was also involved in this year’s Ryder Cup team captains and players. Soon, perhaps 2025 in fact, he may be the Ryder Cup’s captain.
Woods is determined to continue playing until that day comes. I’m not sure if Woods will play in PGA Tour Golf or ride in a home cart. But it’s a dead lock that every minute of physical therapy and every ounce of his energy is working toward the anticipated first tee announcement on the Thursday of the second week in April next spring: “Now driving, Tiger Woods.” We may never know exactly what happened to cause that wreck or, most importantly, what occurred in the hours that led up to it. It’s the essence of the mystery of Tiger, that no one can ever hope to solve.
