Driver Review of Ping G400

Ping, much like other brands, works to bring the CG of drivers back to a low level to allow them to be more flexible. I believe they do this best according to almost all stats.

I can simply review the Ping G400 Driver by saying they went deeper and higher again. Of course, it is not all that simple.

In order to get your CG lower you must remove any weight that is above the point where the ball touches the face. For this reason, they reduced the crown from 0.43mm to its thinnest point.

This is in between the ribs of the Dragonfly design crown that now has an ‘Infinity Edge’ to it as the rim that was around the back on the previous G Driver has been smoothed out.

G400 heads are also more oval at the back than G400, and overall the package is better looking at address.

The crown also has a couple of dots to the rear that you can touch and feel. However, I’m afraid these are not aerodynamic.

The front Turbulators, which reduce friction in airflow over the head to accelerate it along with having an aerodynamic effect, are what does provide some aerodynamic benefits.

Club Specifications

The G400 driver comes in three models: G400, G400 SFT, G400 LST.

G400 Standard has a clubhead weight of 206g from 445cc. Available in nine or one-tenth degree options. Stock swingweight is D3.

The G400 SFT has a 445cc clubhead but comes in slightly lighter at 203g in either 10deg or 12deg options. D1 is the stock swingweight.

G400 LST features a 445cc Clubhead, slightly heavier at 220g. It’s available in either an 8.5- or 10-deg version. Stock swingweight: D4.

The stock shaft is the Alta CB55 and comes in soft regular, regular, stiff, and x-stiff flexes. The standard length is 45 3/4 inches. The G400 can be ordered with PING’s Tour 65 and Tour 75 shafts, as well the Aldila XTorsion Copper or Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Silver Dual Core TiNi or Project X HZRDUS yellow. There is an upcharge with all of the other shaft options. PING Tour, aftermarket shafts come in a standard length 45 1/4 inches.

The G400 driver retails at $399. This review was conducted using the G400 driver in standard with Alta CB55 shaft. The shaft is stiff flex and shortened to 44 1/2″‘.

Performance

I haven’t had the opportunity to maintain confidence with my driver in a long time, but the G400 feels like it is finally happening. This forgiveness is amazing. PING claims the G400 has “deepestCG and highestMOI in golf.” This makes sense to me since it is so fast on mishits. The ball travels very smoothly and stays in the fairway. Some of the best golfers misshit their driver, while others mishit it frequently. We should be able to forgive as many people as we can.

The G400’s aerodynamics also received a significant boost thanks to PING. The improved shape reduces drag 15% during the downswing, meaning more club head speed. G30 needs to be reduced from 300cc in size to achieve aerodynamic performance comparable to the G400.

Engineers of the G400 driver don’t stop with the head. PING offers two shafts to help optimize the G400. Alta CB 55, a mid-trajectory shaft with counterbalance to compensate for the heavier head weight. You get bonus points for it changing from copper color to black once you put it down at home. PING offers Tour 65 and Tour75 shafts to players who desire a heavier shaft, and higher flight. You can also purchase the Kuro Kage 60 or HZRDUS yellow 75 shafts and Aldila X-Torsion for an additional fee.

The G400 driver can be ordered in one of two variants. G400 LST (Low-Spin Tec) is available for those who prefer lower spin. If you want help creating a draw, there’s the G400 SFT (Straight Flight Tec). We will have reviews coming in the next few days.

Ping’s G400 line of drivers offers the best selection, featuring four models to suit all needs.

There are many options available for the drivers of the G400, including the regular version and models with low spin or straighter flying.

With the G400s you can expect to see a lot more distance and more forgiveness. They will let you achieve greater performance and can be used as a driver for a lot of different games.
