Performance

Let’s get right to the big question: did PING maintain the adjustability of the G410 Plus while also boosting the forgiveness? Yes. This is what the G425 Max does.

When I compared the G425 Max to my G410 Plus, it was clear that the G425 Max had more forgiveness. G425 Max’s mishits were consistently less frequent due to a stronger launch and higher spin numbers. On the course, that means there’s less distance between your best swings and all the rest. In comparing the G425 Max to the rest of the market, I don’t think there’s anything that’s quite on its level for forgiveness. For maximum consistency, the G425 max driver would be my recommendation.

Amazingly, the G425 Max manages to achieve increased forgiveness with minimal compromises in adjustability. This driver uses the same adapter as the previous one, so you can use all the same shafts in the same eight positions. The loft can be adjusted as high or low as 1.5 degrees. You can place the 26-gram back weight in one of three positions: Fade, Neutral or Draw. The position you choose has an impact on how the ball flies and where the sweet spot is located.

As one of the leaders in custom fitting, PING offers a great array of stock shafts in the G425 Max driver. There are three proprietary models: ALTA CB 55 Slate, PING Tour, and Alta Distanza. PING offers two hot models for players who want a high-end shaft: the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI (review HERE) and the Mitsubishi TENSEI Av Orange (55.5 and 65 grams).

The Test

Ping was my destination in October for me to be fitted with the length shaft and the type that would best suit me as a driver. While I couldn’t hit the G425 as it was classified back then, I did try the G410 heads. The LST9 degree seemed to be the most suitable for me. To be able to truly assess the G425 driver, I chose the LST model.

The driver was compared to the G410 LST at LSH Auto and Mercedes Benz Stockport with Trackman 4 balls. Reddish Vale Golf Club allowed me to take it to the course and test it.

Reviews of Ping G425 Lst-Driver

The G425 looks and feels great! You’ve probably read my driver reviews. I like a compact, matte-black, classic, and simple head shape. Ping does all of these.

The turbulators now feel more natural, with the color changing from a dark silver to a slate/black.

It’s a bit of a throwback to the old Ping Anser Driver days, which was my favourite driver to play back when I was a Ping contracted Tour player.

Don’t underestimate the comfort of golf. It is a game where everyone can play their best. Comfort is felt when I look down at a Ping Club, which looks much like the traditional Ping Golf club.

The Ping driver has been my companion from range sessions in January to first Tee of the US Open. It is there when your nerves kick in and you feel like you’re unable to move your hands, or you’re so weak that your name can barely be heard. Ping drivers were my constant companion on any professional tour. I was never disappointed by it – the perfect fairway finder.

Ping suggests that hitting the ball harder on the shorter grass will increase its accuracy. They also believe it could be a way to gain more yards.

It also sounds like a Ping, it’s loud, high pitched and has that distinctive noise that everyone can relate to. I don’t think this has changed much from the previous driver models. It’s true that it’s impossible to feel like a Mizuno, but I think that the Ping doesn’t even sound like one.

G425 will be the next generation of the iconic brand’s engineering techniques. It builds on the same great designs and technology that earned it such universal praise for its G400, G410 families.

The standout piece of tech this time around is undoubtedly the new CG shifter. This huge, portable tungsten weight can be found at the back of the club. It results in a similarly extreme low and back (centre-of-gravity) position.
